Calâs house had always been able to draw a dreamy sigh from Sherry. No matter how many times she visited; she didnât think a day would come that she wasnât in love with the house.
Located on the outskirts of the city, the gray two-and-a-half story Victorian-style house, sitting on an open swatch of land, was a wonder to behold. With its half-wrap porch, pointed peak, the simple elegance that cloaked the house, she always found herself reluctant to leave.
As she got out of her car, bag slung over her shoulder, she paused, allowing herself to enjoy the sight of the house shadowed by the sinking sun.
âAre you coming in?â She heard Cal call, though she couldnât see him from where she stood.
Cal grinned as he watched Sherry make her way to the front door. There was an odd tightening in his chest at the prospect of having her there with him for the night. It was a different feeling than heâd ever had before; especially in this regard. Sherry had been to his house on multiple occasions. Why did this time feel so different?
The answer was obvious to him before the question fully registered in his mind. It was different because his feelings for her were different. Before, sheâd been nothing more than his best friend. Now, hopefully, heâd be able to convince her to give moreâreally, truly moreâa try.
When she was walking in the door, he was already half-way there, reaching out to take her bag. She hesitated, narrowing her eyes before handing it over.
âYou can show me the guest room later,â she told him.
âSure,â he said indulgently, setting the bag at the foot of the stairs, having no intention what-so-ever of letting her stay in the guest room but unwilling to say so, lest that start an argument.
âIâve got beer in the fridge,â he told her, making his way back to the kitchen, âand I thought we could order a pizza for dinner.â
âSounds good to me.â Sherry said, getting a glass of water before taking a seat at the table. âBut order it fast so we can talk.â
She waited while Cal called in the order, doing her best to stay patient.
A few minutes later, Cal took a seat across from her, shooting her a self-satisfied smile.
âWhatâs that look for?â She asked suspiciously.
He shrugged, âYouâre here. You came with very minimal argument. I call that a win.â When she rolled her eyes at him, he chuckled. âDonât roll your eyes. Now we can talk and work everything out in the privacy of my home.â
âWhatâs wrong with the privacy of my home?â
âSherry,â he started sweetly, folding his hands on the surface of the table, âFor once in your life, could you refrain from turning everything I say into a fight?â
âI resent that implication! What exactly are you trying to say?â
âOkay, no, then,â he muttered, âIâm simply pointing out that you have a particular talent for finding an argument in anything I say.â
âJust because I point out how youâre wrongââ
âSher, youâre only proving my point.
